🦌 Elk

Migratory Birds & Waterfowl

🕊️ Mourning Dove

🦆 Ducks (Mallard, Wood Duck, Black Duck, Pintail, Canvasback, Redhead, Scaup, Mottled & Sea Ducks)

Daily bag: 6 ducks of any species, with sub-limits — 4 mallards (2 hens), 3 wood ducks, 2 black ducks, 2 redheads, 2 canvasbacks, 3 pintails, 1 mottled duck, 4 total sea ducks (3 scoters, 3 eiders (only 1 hen), 3 long-tailed ducks). Scaup holds at 1/day Oct 9 – Jan 11, then 2/day Jan 12 – 31.

🦢 Canada Goose

🪿 Mergansers, Brant, Light Geese, Coots, Gallinules

• Mergansers: Oct 9 – 12; Nov 18 – 29; Dec 19 – Jan 31. Bag: 5/day, 15 in possession.
• Atlantic Brant: Dec 19 – 31 and Jan 15 – 31. Bag: 1/day, 3 in possession.
• Light geese & coots: Run alongside the duck splits — check the DWR guide for daily figures.
• Youth & Veterans Waterfowl Hunting Days: Oct 24, 2026 + Feb 6, 2027. Open to youth 15 & under, military veterans, and active-duty members. Tundra Swan & Conservation Order

Game Units & Public Access

Virginia doesn’t use numbered “lems” or “units” like the West — management happens through counties, cities, WMAs, and National Forest land. No. Under 16, they must be accompanied by a licensed adult 18+ during the Youth & Apprentice Weekend.

Is Sunday hunting allowed?

Many counties permit Sunday pursuit on private land; Sundays are generally closed on most public lands. Always confirm with the locality and DWR before heading out.

Can I use a crossbow during firearms season?

Most counties allow crossbows during the full archery window, then it converts to a firearm category once the firearms window opens.
